Cllr Julie Grocutt, Deputy Leader of Sheffield Council and Chief Executive Kate Josephs recently joined us on a visit to view progress on the site of our new £8.2m development of 51 new affordable homes at London Road close to Sheffield city centre.

They were joined by our Chief Executive, Matthew Harrison, Director of Development and Tom Hawley Head of Affordable Housing Growth for the North at Homes England on a tour of the site that will transform a former used car sales forecourt into a five-storey apartment block of one and two bed apartments, which will be available for social rent.

Delivered in partnership with Beluga Group, and part funded by Homes England, London Road’s red-brick design celebrates the history of the area, linking back to the terrace properties that once occupied the site and Sheffield’s industrial heritage. The scheme will also feature environmental features that will reduce the cost-in-use for customers and make it a very attractive place to live.

Commenting on the visit, Matthew Harrison, our Chief Executive said:

We’re delighted to have had the opportunity to show Cllr. Grocutt around the new site which will transform the derelict site on London Road into 51 much-needed affordable homes close to Sheffield city centre.

We’re particularly pleased to be bringing high environment credentials to the site, which will enhance the affordability for customers and ensure a sustainable scheme in a fantastic location.

Building much-needed additional affordable housing in all of the areas we operate in continues to be a key focus for us, and as members of the South Yorkshire Housing Partnership, we’re committed to working with the local authorities in the areas to realise their housing priorities . There’s high local demand from residents looking for affordable accommodation, and we’re confident our development will help to alleviate the shortage of affordable housing in the area.

Cllr Grocutt added:

Myself and Kate Josephs were thrilled to take a look around the new development site on London Road which will provide affordable homes for the people of Sheffield. Our future plans for Sheffield, as outlined in our consultation draft Local Plan, look to create neighbourhoods in close proximity to the city centre and we’re so pleased to see more affordable housing close to the heart of our city, while also making use of formerly unused brownfield site.

Tom Hawley, Head of Affordable Housing Growth for the North at Homes England, said:

It’s fantastic to see Great Places building these much needed affordable homes on a brownfield, city centre site with lots of amenities nearby, further demonstrating what can be achieved with investment via the Government’s Affordable Homes Programme. Homes England would welcome more bids for investment into affordable homes in Sheffield and the wider region, working collaboratively with our delivery partners like Great Places and Sheffield City Council.

Work is expected to complete in April 2024.
