Salford City Council’s Deputy Mayor and Lead Member for Housing and Anti-Poverty, Councillor Tracy Kelly has joined us at an event to mark the completion of our new development in Worsley.
The £4.3 million scheme is made up of a mix of two and three-bed homes for shared ownership along with a neighbouring supported housing development, designed specifically to meet the requirements of adults with learning disabilities.
The supported housing was developed working in close partnership with the council and provides a scheme of 12 one- and two-bed self-contained apartments, designed to strike a balance between the ability to provide bespoke care support for each resident, whilst promoting independent living. Great Places will own and manage the scheme with Salford Cares providing the care and support commissioned by Salford City Council.
Councillor Kelly, Melissa Caslake, Chief Executive, Salford City Council and local councillors joined Great Places Director of Development, Nick Gornall and members of the project team for a tour of the site and the new specialist scheme.
Commenting on the completion of the development Nick Gornall, our Director of Development, said:
Our new development in Worsley is a great example of what can be achieved through partnership working to provide a mix of affordable homes and supported living accommodation enabling customers to live closer to friends, family and support networks.
The City Council identified the need for additional supported housing in the area, and we have worked in partnership over several years to design and deliver this new bespoke development. The new homes will promote independent living, with the ability to adapt care provision to suit customer needs, future-proofing the building for its residents.
The people who are moving in are currently living in alternative supported accommodation, some of them outside of Salford and away from their families. Our new homes will enable people to live closer to friends and family in new homes designed to meet their support needs.
Councillor Tracy Kelly, Statutory Deputy City Mayor and Lead Member for Housing and Anti-Poverty at Salford City Council, added:
The completion of these new homes is fantastic news. From the initial discussions to where we are today has taken a long time with many hurdles along the way, and I would like to thank Great Places and everybody involved for their hard work and determination.
Essentially, these new homes mean that Salford people who had to be placed outside of the city can now move back home again, closer to their family and friends. I’m delighted that we have been able to provide these important homes that will make a huge difference to local families.
Jillian Lockett, Head of Services at Salford Cares, said:
Salford Cares is delighted to be the chosen provider for this fabulous scheme, and we’d like to thank Salford Council for the opportunity. The service model here is an example of an excellent working partnership between Great Places, Salford Council and Salford Cares, through which we can enable residents to live in high-quality apartments with on-site support and help them become a part of community life in Salford. We’re incredibly proud to be a part of this project and to be supporting individuals to achieve positive outcomes – all of us are very excited to see what the future holds for them.
The site was acquired from Salford City Council and the scheme has been funded through Homes England, Salford City Council and Great Places.
The development has been built by PLP Construction, who were procured through Great Places’ Innovation Chain North (ICN) framework. During the development, PLP delivered £59,000 of social value by providing 3 new local jobs, 41 weeks of apprenticeships and work experience, and £2,500 was donated to local community groups. Community projects supported included a local social supermarket, and the provision of building materials for a group focused on providing mental health support through gardening and nature projects.
