The Young Creatives is a group of three young artists – Katie, Laura and Millie – working with Great Places Housing Group and Manchester Histories to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Gateways to Oldham PFI project.

They are exploring the history of the local area and, along with a historian, are recording residents’ memories of living and working in Oldham. As part of the project, they’re asking local residents to submit art, crafts, poetry and other creative pieces to be included in an exhibition at Gallery Oldham as well as a book, to be launched in September 2023.

You don’t need to be a professional artist or trained craftsperson – everyone is welcome to take part! The Young Creatives would love you to make something in answer to the question:

What Does Home Look Like to You?

This can be any form you like, and it could be:

Some ideas of things that remind you of home could be:

These are just suggestions – there are no right or wrong answers!

You can drop your items off in an envelope, box or bag with your name, address and phone number included so we know it’s your work, at either The Primrose Community Centre, The Crossley Community Centre, or Fitton Hill Library.

If easier, you can also send any written pieces or photographs by email to: OldhamPFI@greatplaces.org.uk

Please submit your work as soon as you’ve finished it by Friday 9 June 2023.

Local residents are also recording their memories of living in Oldham, which will become an important archive for future generations. If you would like to chat with us about your memories of living or working in the area, we’d love to hear from you too! Please email Janine@manchesterhistories.co.uk or leave your contact details with Naseem at The Crossley Community Centre, Jan at The Primrose Community Centre or Nazet at Fitton Hill Library.
