We're supporting National Hoarding Awareness Week

Great Places is supporting National Hoarding Awareness Week by hosting the Greater Manchester Regional Hoarding Conference 2023. In attendance will be mental health and adult social care services, housing registered providers as well as people who have lived experience of hoarding.

Hoarding Awareness Week runs from 15 – 19 May and aims to combat the stigma associated with hoarding.

Hoarding is a psychological condition which results in an individual storing and collecting an extreme amount of any material, which they cannot discard or part with without feeling extremely distressed. These items may not be perceived to have any value to anyone except themselves and may start to hinder their life.

Great Places is committed to supporting customers with hoarding behaviours and ensuring that they can access the help that they need, at the right time. Our Tenancy Coach Service does fantastic work with customers to support them with hoarding including helping them to access mental health services and encouraging them to seek support from social services or fire services if needed. The service has strong partnership links with relevant agencies and organisations to ensure the best possible support is given.

Most importantly the service works with customers by meeting them where they are at, addressing any safety concerns and understanding what customers want from the service and how they want to change. Staff work with customers at their own pace and support them to undertake small tasks to make big changes over time.

If you are a Great Places customer and want to speak to someone about hoarding behaviours, please contact your Neighbourhood Services Manager who will be happy to signpost you to support from our Tenancy Coach Team.
