Angie’s Angels in Rochdale launched an inspiring cooking project designed to enhance the cooking skills and independence of local community members.

Thanks to the generous support of Markhams, who donated £1,000, the initiative successfully conducted ten engaging cooking sessions that provided invaluable training and resources to participants.

The project saw 25 individuals take part in the cookery courses, each leaving with a newfound confidence in meal preparation. Participants were equipped with both slow cookers and air fryers, enabling them to experiment with healthy and convenient cooking methods.

The group included:

  • 10 prison leavers wanting to cook independently and reintegrate into society.
  • 5 individuals who had recently transitioned from hostels into their own homes, eager to develop essential life skills.
  • 10 people in recovery looking to fill their time productively while learning a new, rewarding skill.

The feedback from participants highlights the positive impact of the project. Paul, one of the attendees, expressed how surprised he was at how simple and cost-effective it is to create homemade soup, saying, “I can’t believe how easy it is to make soup from scratch, and cheap; I’m never buying a tin again.”

Similarly, Nathan, another participant, shared his new recently discovered appreciation for cooking, saying “I never really ate that well because I thought it was too hard to make things, but the slow cooker curry recipe was so easy; you just throw it all in and switch on.” This reflects the project’s success in making cooking accessible to everyone, regardless of their prior experience in the kitchen.

Angie’s Angels is proud to have facilitated this initiative, which not only taught practical cooking skills but also fostered a sense of community and support among participants.
