Eleanor is a 55 year old customer who recently moved into our John Atkinson Court Independent Living scheme.

Eleanor has emotional unstable disorder and lived in her previous property for three years. Unfortunately she was experiencing ongoing anti-social behaviour problems with young people outside her property and lived with her curtains closed permanently due to feeling intimidated. This really affected Eleanor’s mental health and was impacting on her ability to live a happy, independent life.

One of our Independent Living Coordinators at the scheme, Sophie, worked alongside the Community Mental Health Team to help Eleanor secure a property at John Atkinson Court.

Eleanor now lives in a ground floor property with a patio door leading onto the communal outdoor space, which she says she absolutely loves. Eleanor enjoys having her curtains and patio door open on a regular basis and likes to watch the world go by outside, from her new home.

Eleanor says her life has improved so much since moving into her new home.

Sophie, Independent Living Coordinator says:

It is an absolute joy to see Eleanor thriving in her new home. She is really enjoying having the chance to be independent whilst also enjoying the communal spaces, which she didn’t previously have the chance to do.

This Starts at Home Day, Eleanor’s story shows the importance of supported housing within our communities and the positive impact it can have on individuals to have a safe space to call home.
