Councillor Joanna Midgley recently visited Oliva Lodge in Clayton, Greater Manchester, to meet our Independence and Wellbeing colleagues to see first-hand the difference this scheme makes to the young women who live there.

During her tour of the scheme, Cllr Midgley was able to chat with the team working at Oliva Lodge about how this scheme empowers customers to make positive life choices and how we aim to resettle customers into their own homes with the necessary skills to sustain a tenancy. Cllr Midgley also visited one of the young women and her baby at the scheme to hear how much of a difference Olivia Lodge has made to her life and about the great support she receives from Great Places.

Olivia Lodge provides accommodation and support for homeless young women aged between 16-25, who are either pregnant or have children aged five and under. The scheme is a purpose-built accommodation containing 12 self-contained, fully furnished flats, a communal lounge, a playroom and a training kitchen.

Reflecting on the visit, Joanna Midgley, Deputy Leader for Manchester City Council said:

Olivia Lodge is a fantastic facility providing much-needed quality accommodation for young parents and children experiencing homelessness. I really enjoyed my visit to meet the team and see the facilities on offer.

I was really impressed by the commitment of the staff to ensure that they provide holistic and person-centred support so that the young parents are able to make informed choices and gain skills and confidence. It was also lovely to speak to a young mum and her child – she really appreciated the support and facilities on site.

Thanks to the Great Places team for being a valued, trusted and innovative partner.

Andrew Gray, Director of Independence and Wellbeing at Great Places Housing Group added:

We were really pleased to welcome Councillor Joanna Midgley, Deputy Leader for Manchester City Council and Sean Bleasdale, Commissioner for Young People’s Services to our service for young women at Olivia Lodge.

We have a wide range of supported housing services across the region and Greater Manchester; we work closely with Manchester City Council on delivering very much-needed services to a range of customers and it is very encouraging when colleagues from Manchester City Council are able to visit the services, meet customers and colleagues and see the great work of the team and listen to customer’s experiences.
