Councillor Martyn Cox, leader of Bolton Council, was the guest of honour to cut the ribbon at an event to mark the official completion of a £2.3million ‘age friendly’ development for the over-55s in the borough.

Cllr. Cox, along with senior officers from the housing and regeneration teams, was invited to have a look around Great Places Housing Group’s recently completed development of 18 one-bedroom cottage-style apartments in Horace Street, Halliwell, on the site of the former St Joseph’s parish centre. The group also had the opportunity to meet members of the project team including Helen Spencer the Executive Director of Growth at Great Places, and meet with residents.

The project, the first delivered by the Great Places’ new in-house construction company Terra Nova Developments Limited, involved working closely with the council to address the need for this specific type of affordable housing in the borough.  Aimed at customers who were looking to downsize, the apartments, available for affordable rent, include a range of amenities including wet rooms, hidden adaptations by Invisible Creations and a shared garden to enjoy.

Commenting on the visit Helen Spencer, Great Places’ Executive Director of Growth, said:

We’re delighted to have been able to show Cllr. Cox and his team around this age-friendly scheme, that looks to address the specific need for this type of accommodation in the local area. The apartments have been carefully designed to enable our future customers to live independently for as long as possible. The project is a great example of partners working together to develop much needed affordable homes that suits a specific need in the area.

Council Leader Cllr Cox, said:

It’s really great to see these town centre regeneration projects come to fruition, with many more already in the pipeline.

Horace Street is an important development for Bolton, as it offers much needed housing for residents who are looking to downsize and the adaptations mean residents can look forward to enjoying many years in their new home.

The communal gardens meaning that sense of community is a key component for residents, it’s so nice to see housing that serves the community whilst offering quality and comfort.
