At Great Places, we believe in the power of community. The Northmoor Together Alleyway Project is a prime example of what can be accomplished when we unite with residents to achieve a common goal. This long-term initiative, which began in 2006, has seen local neighbours working together to transform a neglected alleyway into a lively, communal space. It’s a testament to community spirit, determination, and the collaborative efforts of both residents and our teams at Great Places.
The alleyways behind the homes in Northmoor had long been in disrepair. Overflowing bins, persistent complaints, and safety concerns plagued the neighbourhood. These spaces, not owned by any single resident, had no designated responsibility for upkeep. Recognizing the need for action, the residents came together, driven by a shared desire to secure and make their alleyways nicer and cleaner.
Great Places was proud to support this community-led initiative. Local residents organized a community clean-up day, and we were there to help. Our Neighbourhoods team and Ground Maintenance Team assisted with waste removal and clearing moss. The presence of Guy Cresswell, Executive Director of Customer Services, highlighted our commitment to the project and the importance of community involvement.
Judy Donnelly, one of the project’s key figures, recalls the early days of their efforts said.
The alleyways were in a terrible state, it was unsafe and unsanitary, and something had to be done.
Over the years, the project faced numerous challenges, particularly in securing funding and navigating bureaucratic hurdles. However, during this time, Great Places has provided trust, advice, and practical assistance. Funding from the Council and the efforts of our Ground Maintenance team led to significant improvements, including securing benches to the walls and ongoing maintenance.
Judy said:
The neighbours’ collective idea and local activism were the driving forces. It’s getting better because we are doing the work together and we reported issues straight away. We can really see a difference between how it was and how it’s looking now.
The project has not only improved the physical space but also fostered a stronger sense of community. The alleyways are now cleaner and safer, providing a secure place for children to play and neighbours to gather. However, challenges remain, such as drainage issues and the need to prevent fly-tipping and improper use of the space.
Judy added:
If everyone does their part and wrong uses of the space are reported, the improvements will continue, it’s a really positive goal for the community to have a safe space for all neighbours to enjoy collectively.
The Northmoor Together Alleyway Project exemplifies the power of collaboration. At Great Places, we are proud to have played a role in supporting the residents of Northmoor. Together, we have turned a long-neglected space into a thriving, shared environment, honouring Great Places goal of supporting and improving our communities.
